A FLOATING BRIDGE

A narrow bridge connects a new laundry room to the bedroom level. This bridge, made of a steel plate, appears to float within the space.

Underneath, a new staircase was upgraded with a gentler rise and run, a new drywall lining, and durable hardwood flooring that wraps up to become the guardrail on the top floor.

Using steel on the bridge also ensured that the structure was thin and provided adequate headroom for the stair that passes under it. An existing wood-burning fireplace was restored and wrapped with a new steel surround, cantilevered to match the laundry bridge and bent to stop firewood from spilling onto the floor.
